Newly Created Ombudsman Promises To Fulfill Mandate


The Ombudsman to the Abia State Governor, Justice Kyrian Chukwuemeka Nwankpa (Rtd.) has promised to fulfil the purpose of establishing the office as a public complaints commission by Governor Alex Otti.

He has therefore described his office as an innovation designed to make the right impact on Abians.

Speaking at an interactive forum with the Journalists in Government House, Umuahia, Justice Nwankpa disclosed that the essence of an Ombudsman is to ensure citizens and residents of the State have avenues to report any violation of their right or abuse of power or office by public office holders .

“The function of the Ombudsman is to receive complaints from private citizens against public servants , agencies of government, corporate bodies and businesses and it is the business of the Ombudsman to investigate those complaints with a view to coming up with recommendations and solutions if possible”

According to him, his office entails that he would be assisting the Governor in receiving complaints from the public as well as addressing such complaints by making recommendations to the Governor after investigations must have been concluded.

“This office has not existed in this State before. As you all know, this is an innovation by His Excellency, Governor of Abia State, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR. Ombudsman can be said to be a public advocate. It can be called a public defender.”

He further emphasised that the office of Ombudsman is established,
“In order to ensure that government’s activities are going well and achieving the purpose and that the policies of government are making the right impact”

Justice Nwankpa, who revealed that so far, there are complaints he is already handling informed that the process of expanding the office is ongoing. He called on the public to make good use of the existence of the Ombudsman to get justice.

Justice Nwankpa commended Governor Alex Otti for establishing the office of the Ombudsman in Abia State and

enjoined individuals and groups who have genuine complaints to bring them to the office.
