Maiden Edition Of South-East/South-South Tournament Kicks Off In Umuahia As Otti Tasks Athletes On Professionalism 



The maiden edition of the South East/South South volleyball tournament has kicked off in Umuahia with Team Abia leading so far.

Declaring the competition open at the indoor hall of the Umuahia Township stadium, Abia state governor, Dr. Alex Otti tasked the athletes on professionalism at the competition.

He expressed the government’s keen interest in sports development in Abia State .

The Governor, represented by his Deputy, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu said that the tournament would enable youths to discover their talents and exposed them to international recognition.

“Abia State Government is very happy to host the maiden edition of the South-East/South-South volleyball championship for the male and female categories.

” We recognize what sports does in every environment as it educates and propels people, united and exposes them to positive advancement”, Otti said.

He appreciated the National President of the Volleyball Association for granting Abia State the opportunity to host the first edition of the South-East/South-South volleyball championship.

In his address, the Commissioner for Youths and Sports Development, Sir Nwaobilor Ananaba described the event as “an extension of what we started when we assumed office – the unity games”

He said that the governor is doing everything possible to promote sports in the state and congratulated all the athletes that are participating in the competition.

The Commissioner further said that the “government intends to find you, harness you, make you the best athletes you are and a good citizen of Abia State”.

In her speech, the 2nd Vice President and Chairman League Management Committee, Nigeria Volleyball Federation, ACG Nkechi Ezugwu expressed gratitude to the sports loving governor of Abia state , Dr. Alex Otti for finding it worthy to support and sponsor the first ever South-East/South-South volleyball championship.

While describing the governor as an uncommon transformer and digital sports loving governor of a new Abia, she enjoined the participating teams, coaches, and officiating personnel to show good sportsmanship during the championship.

Contributing, the State Director of Sports, Mr. George Obioma expressed confidence that with the competition the South East and South South will bounce back in Volleyball

He thanked Dr. Alex Otti for sponsoring the game and appreciated the Commissioner for Youths and Sports Development for his effort in achieving the governor’s goals in sports development. He said that Team Abia is doing well and maintained that at the end of the tournament, it would bring back the zeal of volleyball among young people.
“For us in Abia we want to go international so that we can get all the gains that has to do with our youths going abroad in the name of sports. You can see that Abia volleyball is gradually bouncing back.
“At the end of this tournament,
it will bring out that zeal, it will bring back that joy, it will bring back that interest for our students and all the youths out there to return woto the game of volleyball. And I assure you if that is achieved, our players will be playing abroad.”

Speaking in an interview, a former Olympics gold medalist and Abia born Track and Field expert, Mr. Clement Chukwu appreciated the revival going on in various sports in Abia under governor Alex Otti. He encouraged Team Abia in the volleyball tournament to put in their best to win the competition, stressing the need for them to be committed to sports and added that that was the way himself started.
