How Abia Government, Ohanaeze, Prominent Nigerians Paid Last Respect To Prof Irukwu

...Described Him As A Patriot , Hero and Selfless Leader


The remains of the former President General of Ohaneze Ndigbo Worldwide, Late Prof Joseph Ogbonnaya Irukwu has been laid to rest in his hometown, Amokwe Item in Bende Local Government Area of the state.
Aged 89,  late Prof Irukwu was until his death the doyen of insurance in Nigeria,a seasoned administrator,a legal luminary and an illustrous Igbo son.
Speaking at an interdenominational church service held at Jane Egbichi Oteh Mini stadium,Governor Alex Otti, commended the  impactful contributions, and enduring legacy of  late Prof. Irukwu.
He expressed  shock at his untimely departure and highlighted  the deceased’s desire to seeing positive change in Abia but regretted that it was tragically cut short by his passing just one month after the emergence of the present adminstration.
Governor Otti acknowledged the significant achievements of late prof Irukwu in various fields, such as insurance, law, and his leadership within Ohaneze, but stressed that the most profound accomplishment of  Prof. Irukwu was his devotion to the Christian faith.
The Governor encouraged those present to embrace Christ.
His words “If you believe you’ve achieved great success in life but have neglected to sit and pray to God, it’s time to reconsider your priorities”.
He expressed hope that Joe Irukwu will rise again on the resurrection morning  alongside all those who had devoted their lives to Christ, saying that that life and death are in the hands of God, Governor Otti urged the Irukwu family to bear the loss with fortitude.
In his tribute,former President General, Ohaneze Ndigbo Worldwide, Chief Gary Igariwe on behalf of the apex Igbo socio cultural group said the deceased was an  exceptional leader who distinguished himself in service and prayed God to console the family he left behind.
Also, the President General of the Item Development Association, Sir Onwuka Orji asserted that the late Prof Joe Irukwu trained and mentored many Item professionals and captains of industry who are excelling all over  the word , maintaining that  his passage has created  a big vacuum in Item land and Nigeria as a whole.
In another  tribute ,a grandson of the deceased,Tobe Irukwu described their grand father as a strong and caring  man who loved his family greatly, adding that he will be missed by all.
In his Sermon, Rev Dr Okey Onuzo who preached on the essence of the love of God for mankind  by giving his son to die to redeem mankind asserted that whosoever recieves Christ will gain eternal life.

Earlier, during a commendation Service to pay a last respect to Prof. Irukwu , Chief (Engr) Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, the President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has counseled Igbo sons and daughters engage in across the world to desist from involving in fraudulent practices, saying that Igbos are known to be enterprising and are achievers of excellence in all areas of human endeavours and not in scam.

In his speech while decorating post humorously, the first President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Prof Joseph Ogbonnaya Irukwu during a valedictory Service in his honour at the International Conference Centre, Umuahia on Friday, Iwuanyanwu, the current President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo said Igbos are not known to be involved in vices such as fraud, kidnapping, terrorism etc.

He therefore called on them to engage in fruitful ventures and work hard like late Prof. Jos Irukwu did.

According to him, Irukwu has paid a good price of excellence, service, dedication to fatherland, patriotism etc, adding that the younger generation should emulate and imbibe his startling qualities. He therefore officially inducted the deceased posthumously into the Igbo Hall of Fame.

Indeed, in an outpouring of encomiums at the International Conference Centre ,Umuahia at the service for Irukwu who was until his death, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), an insurance guru, author and cultural leader of not only his Item people of Abia State, but the entire Igbo nation.

In his speech during the valedictory service organized by Abia State government, Governor Alex Otti of Abia State, described Professor Irukwu as a seasoned administrator and selfless statesman who championed the cause of Ndigbo during his life time.

The Governor said that Irukwu’s demise is a huge loss for Abia state and Nigeria at large.

Otti, who was represented by the Secretary to Abia State Government (SSG), Professor Kenneth Kalu, recalled the lawyer’s imprint in the insurance and legal profession, pointing out that he was the pioneer President, Nigeria Re Insurance Corporation as well as the first Professor of Insurance in Nigeria who later rose to the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria.

The Abia governor therefore urged his family and all those he left behind to draw solace in the fact that the late sage impacted many lives, even as he commiserated with the Irukwu family, Item people and Abians as a whole on the irreparable loss.

In his speech on behalf of Abia State Council of Elders, pioneer NDDC chairman, Chief Onyema Ugochukwu said the deceased showed patriotism and love for Item people and Ndigbo in general, stressing that as Chairman Abia State Council of Elders, late Professor Joe Irukwu piloted the council effectively even as the council gained significance under his watch.

In his tribute, the President General, Item Development Association, Sir Onwuka Orji said the deceased was a driving force that united Item people. He described him as a great mentor, icon who orchestrated development and honour in Item land.

In his sermon, the President Vision Africa Radio, Bishop Sunday Onuoha, emphasized that the late Prof. Joe Irukwu did not only make a name for himself, but also left a lasting legacy.

The Bishop asked the congregation to live lives that would be remembered and valued after death.

The event was attended by prominent sons and daughters as well as stakeholders in Igboland, an array of dignitaries from all walks of life including former Governor of Akwa Ibom State,Udom Emmanuel,General Ike Nwachukwu( Rtd),Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe,former Senate President,Adolf Wabara,President General,Ohaneze Ndigbo,Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu,a former Minister of Federal Republic of Nigeria, Dr Uchechukwu Ogah, Commissioner for Information,Prince Okey Kanu , other chieftains of Ohaneze as well as distinguished sons and daughters of Item land and a host of other dignitaries.
