Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has engaged the services of
Julius Berger, a reputable construction company which is to handle the rehabilitation project in Aba.
The Commissioner for Information and Culture ,Prince Okey Kanu stated this while briefing Journalists on the outcome of this week’s Executive Council Meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti.
Prince Okey Kanu stated that what previous adminstrations could not do in 24years is being undertaken by the government of Alex Otti in just four months reminding all that Dr Otti took a tour of the road with MD . Julius Berger after his declared electoral victory.
He said; “Port Harcourt road is a very important road that has not been in use for upward of 15 years or more.
“If you recall, immediately after his election and victory at the polls, even before he was sworn in, Governor Otti took a tour of that road with the MD of Julius Berger and the management.
He noted that the road has remained deplorable and not been in use for over 15 years noting that what previous administrations could not do for many years”.
“Dr Otti came to power prepared and has remained focused. He knows what he came to do, that is the reason in under four months of taking over as Governor of the State, he has done what previous adminstrations could not do”.
Prince Kanu disclosed that many roads in Aba including Umuimo, Udeagbala, Mcc and Old Express are ready for commissioning while the operation zero pot hole in Umuahia is progressing steadily even as demolition work on Ossah- Abia Tower expansion work has reached 80 percent.
While noting that Aba and Umuahia have been turned to construction sites, The information Commissioner said asphalt is to be laid along Uzuakoli road while Alayi- ,Ozuitem road has been earmarked for rehablitation.
He reiterated that the Light up project in the State Capital , Umuahia has been systematically done with movement to Aba as the next focus.
The information commissioner noted that Exco frowned at the level of street trading in major cities of the State with particular reference to the commercial hub,Aba
Hon. Kanu restated that government will not condone the defacement of newly reconstructed roads and said that Government will not allow the trend to continue as the Committee incharge will henceforth ensure strict compliance.
Prince Kanu said that the Aba International Trade Fair which is billed to commence is meant to bring SMEs together to showcase the potentials of the State to the world, adding that ACCIMA is working with government to make the event a huge success.
He further disclosed that following the participation of Abia in the Abuja Trade Fair, Abia has been commissioned to supply Combat Boots to the Nigerian Police.
Also speaking, the Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities ,Engr. Ikechukwu Monday said that his Ministry is working with EDDC to restore light to all government establishments that were previously disconnected from the national grid due to non payment of electricity bills, noting that the effort has led to the reconnection of some government esblishments while private businesses will also benefit from the gesture to boost businesses in the state.
He disclosed that the legacy debts of the past administration made this government to work out modalities for the powering of public schools and communities with renewable energy, adding that efforts are in top gear to get the Abia State House of Assembly sign into law the Electricity Law already assented to which grants States power to generate, transmit and distribute power.
Answering questions from Journalists, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Special Duties, Dr( Mrs) Betty Obasi said a lot of activities have been mapped out to celebrate the 2023 World Sight Day with the Theme ” Loving your eyes at your place of work” .
She said the event will feature free eye test, distribution of free eye glasses even as a vision corridore has been erected in some motor parks, worker’s secretariat and other public places as a way of reaching out to the public.
She also said on compassionate grounds,the government will carry out all these in the 3 Senatorial Zones not minding it’s huge investment in the Diagnostics Centre.
Dr (Mrs) Obasi said that the administration is committed to upgrading health facilities in the state to a world class standard, noting that the newly retrofitted eye centre at the Abia Specialist Hospital ,Umuahia has been repositioned to serve the people better.
