Governor Otti Renames Ossah Road To Aguiyi Ironsi Boulevard As Former Army Chief Commissions


The newly rehabilitated 3.5 km 6-lane Mission hill- Ossah road has been renamed Aguiyi Ironsi Boulevard by governor Alex Otti OFR and commissioned by a former Chief of General Staff Commodore Ebitu Ukiwe.

Speaking during the ceremony held at the Okpara Square Umuahia, the Governor of Abia state,Dr Alex Otti expressed happiness that the Project which was flagged off on September last year was completed on time.

Governor Otti emphasized that the aim was to enhance the aesthetics of Umuahia the state capital, recounted the challenges faced during the early stages of the project, noting that despite the initial discouragement from colleagues his administration remained determined to transform the landscape of the state capital.

He said that the state government initially identified about one hundred and thirty five buildings for demolition and paid one hundred compensation before the commencement of the project.

“This road project is very significant for a number of reasons. For starters, it is the first clear sign to anyone visiting the State capital from this axis that a new dawn, defined by bold thinking, is upon us. But it is a lot more. It speaks to the emerging tradition of excellence and innovation, stakeholder collaboration, and the place of due process in the conduct of government business.

“Recall that I announced at the flag off ceremony last year that we shall, at the completion of this section of the road, set our sight on the dualisation and holistic improvement of the stretch from Abia Tower to Onuimo, terminating at our boundary with Imo State. The dream remains alive as officials of the State Ministry of Works continue to engage with their counterparts at the Federal level for the purpose of aligning the engineering design and other important preliminary works.

“Our ultimate goal is to remodel Umuahia into a great city that supports its primary role as the State capital; but also as an attractive destination for those seeking to set up, and run profitable businesses, start a new life, raise families, and travel for leisure. We have a 360 degree view of what will change in Umuahia by the time we are done.

“This city will in the next 18 to 24 months become a reference point in the development of sustainable cities in this part of the world. We shall invest massively in suitable support infrastructural facilities especially roads, rail lines, efficient water supply for homes and offices and independent and reliable electricity supply system.” The governor stated.

The governor used the opportunity to thank the people of Mgbaja Ossah for the support given to the Ministry of works as well as the contractor leading timely realization of the project.

Speaking on behalf of the Abia legislative caucus, the member representing Isialangwa North and south federal Constituency,Chief Ginger Onwusibe while applauding the landmark achievements of the Governor within the period under review, said that Governor Alex Otti has achieved in one year what can be achieved in four years.

Speaking on the project, the Commissioner for works said the economic importance of the road can not be overemphasized as it will make for easy flow of traffic, improve aesthetics of the area, enhance socio- economic activities by extension the internally revenue generation of the state.

He appreciated the contractor for delivering a quality job within a record time, adding that the road is furnished with street lights and drainages on both sides of the road for its durability.

In his speech, the Mayor of Umuahia north LGA Chief Victor Ikeji while describing the project as unprecedented also thanked Governor Otti for not only concentrating his developmental strides at the city center but also empowering the mayors to extend same at the grassroot level.

In his remarks on behalf of the host Community , the Ossah-Ibeku Community, the traditional Ruler of Eziama na mgbaja Ossah autonomous Community,Eze Chiabuotu Emelike while thanking the Governor for the project which has opened the area for greater economic Opportunities, described the project as the beginning of Greater things for his Community.
