Abia to partner National Mathematical Centre in their Programs


The Governor, Dr Alex Otti has charged the National Mathematical Centre NMC Abuja to develop more  initiatives of international standard for reawakening and sustaining interest in mathematical sciences.

Governor Otti gave the charge when a delegation from the centre led by the Director/Chief Executive, Prof. Promise Mebine paid him a courtesy visit at Government House Umuahia.

The Governor represented by his Chief of Staff, Pastor Caleb Ajagba while describing mathematics, its applications and roles as boundless, underscored the importance his administration is giving to the  educational system in the State and its academic curricular towards Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

The State Chief Executive further commended the leadership of the centre for providing a veritable platform for training, learning and research in Mathematical sciences and their applications and promised to partner them in their programs.

In his address earlier, the Director/Chief Executive of the National Mathematical Centre NMC Abuja, Prof. Promise Mebine, said they are saddled with the responsibility of training and developing high level personnel in Mathematical sciences, identify and encourage young talents and stimulate passion for mathematical sciences among Nigerian students through National and international Olympiads.

Prof. Mebine commended Governor Otti for his giant strides across the State within a short period in office, and solicited partnership with the State government in carrying out capacity building workshops for secondary school mathematics teachers and the training of mathematics teachers and students in mental arithmetic in secondary schools across the State.

According to him, the workshops are targeted at updating the knowledge of teachers on relevant concepts in mathematics, improving the teaching skills and competences of mathematics teachers.

He said the Workshop will also gear towards making them proficient in the use of innovative evaluation methods and teaching strategies in the presentation of school mathematics topics as well as arousing and sustaining students interests in the study of Mathematical sciences among others.

The Commissioners for Education, Prof. Eme Uche Eme, Science and Technology, Mr Chima Oriaku, Digital Economy and SME counterpart, Dr Matthew Ekwuribe among other top government officials were present during the visit.
